Biography

Maltese contemporary photographer George Abdilla, born in 1973, originally of Santa Venera nowadays lives in St Paul’s Bay. Mr Abdilla studied photography with various prominent professional photographers and on his own, becoming the first Maltese to sit and attain the AEB A’ Level in photography in 1994. In 1997, George submitted and gained the licentiate in press photography with the Master Photographers Association. In 2011, he presented a new panel and attained an Associateship with the Malta Institute of Professional Photography and the British Society for Wedding and Portrait Photographers.

 

Mr Abdilla participated, placed and won various local and international competitions, and collective exhibitions, including the Malta Biennale, Malta Photographic Society National Annual competition, Val del Ledro - Italy, UK and others. George set up his first solo exhibition in 2012, entitled Portraits in Jazz, which featured 3 years of his works covering the Malta Jazz Festival.

 

His work predominantly features the human element, nature, and life. Most of his work is produced in monochrome media, where Mr Abdilla feels that it contributes to focus his energies on the subject, simplifying the images to communicate better what he experiences. His work has featured in all Maltese newspapers, various magazines both local and abroad.

 

He furthered his studies pursuing a Masters in Fine Arts in Digital Arts at the University of Malta, focusing on working with the early photographic printing technologies. He is an active member of the Malta Photographic Society and a founder member of the Malta Institute of Professional Photography. He has delivered various talks on and currently teaches photography at the Life Long Learning programme within the Ministry of Education.
